Video: Amelia Coburn “Something Wild”

Alongside the news of her biggest London headline show yet, at the Royal Albert Hall on 24th October, Teeside songwriter Amelia Coburn has released a dramatic new single. Inspired by feminist writers like Angela Carter and Clarissa Pinkola Estés, ‘Something Wild’ is a folk anthem for anyone who feels shackled or limited by society’s expectations. ‘Something Wild’ drives forward on an urgent rhythm and an insistent guitar riff. Sweeping, soaring strings add a cinematic feel and deep layers. The result is a textured, atmospheric sound, over which Coburn delivers an excellent, melodic vocal performance.

The video, filmed by Rob Irish, matches the tension of the music; drawing on fairy tale imagery and artfully shot in woodland, it draws us into its cinematic drama. There’s a symbolic ending when Coburn dons her own wolf mask to join the pack, acknowledging her own wildness within.

Coburn says of the song: “The women in the fairy tales I grew up reading and loving were quite often populated with damsels in distress running away from danger or waiting to be rescued. I wanted to flip that narrative on its head. The protagonist sheds the skin of domestic life, bares her teeth and becomes the very same wolf that the old fables warned us about.”

The self-proclaimed folk horror artist has enjoyed a fabulous start to her musical career, with her 2024 debut album, “Between The Moon And The Milkman”, released to critical acclaim, and also appearing on Paul Weller’s latest album “Find El Dorado” alongside the likes of Robert Plant and Noel Gallagher. Now, she is looking forward to a headline gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall as part of their Elgar Room series. Exciting times for an exciting, new songwriter. Immerse yourself in ‘Something Wild’ and then check out the album.
