American Aquarium appear to be on a creative roll with their latest album, New Ways To Lose, getting great reviews even though it is their twentieth album in as many years. Added to this is the fact that the band have played the role of road warriors to the hilt with over 4,000 shows to their credit. The band took their name from Wilco’s I’m Trying To Break Your Heart, and have ground out a dedicated fan 
base through their sheer effort. Founder BJ Barham has said that each of the band’s albums is a snapshot of the time they were recorded, and the new album is the latest instalment covering a very difficult time in America’s history. American UK’s Martin Johnson caught up with BJ Barhum over Zoom to discuss the new album and look forward to the band’s short UK & European tour later in the year. BJ gives full credit to producer Shooter Jennings for helping the band capture essentially their live sound in the studio, which means that listeners get a sense of the power of the band playing live. At this distance in Europe, it is too easy to form a prejudiced view of the attitudes in the American South, but BJ is a born and bred southerner who, through his songs, shines an objective light on what is really happening. The band have built their success as a truly independent band, and BJ hopes their example will be a model for new bands to learn from.
