The new single from Wyatt Lowe is immediately captivating. Opening with heavenly steel lifted by light percussion, Desert bursts into life with more urgent and ranging guitar, moody sounds that locate us in the desert. This is music that we quickly associate with outlaws and the sweeping, epic films of the American West. Although drawing on the traditions of cinema and desert-noir soundtracks, the quality of the writing and playing, along with the control of pace and the strength in quieter moments, make Desert something new, as if cleansed by those storms on the horizon.
Daniel Salini provides sweetly sliding pedal steel, his notes falling like droplets of moonlit desert rain over Eric Stoye’s shuffling, brushed rhythms and Wally Barnum’s smooth stand-up bass. The combination of Lowe’s and Connor Mlynek’s guitars over their bandmate’s musical textures creates a truly cinematic feel, steeped in atmosphere and musical intensity. Lyrically, the song creates tension through its narrative and imagery – the desert is filled with darkness, rain, lightning storms and a weary Lowe asks: “Let me lay down and rest in the desert tonight.”
Directed by Will Floor, the accompanying video carries the same sense of story and mood as the song itself. Playing under the dark of desert night, the band are illuminated by the setting sun and lighting, throwing striking, elongated shadows of themselves against the rocks. The artful additions of cowboys and horses reinforce the narrative, making a film experience that is as absorbing as the music.
This is the title track from Lowe’s new album, Deserts, which is due for release tomorrow, 9th October 2026. Raised in Southern California and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Lowe has spent a life immersed in music. His great-uncle Howard ‘Jerry Ward’ Lowe was the original bass player for Merle Haggard and The Strangers, and Wyatt is carrying that family tradition forward, putting together his first album at the tender age of 13 and touring the country by the age of 15. Over the years, he has shared stages with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, B.B. King, Chris Isaak, and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. This is outlaw country from a musician’s musician who pulls together all his experience from a musical lifetime. Absorbing stuff.
