‘The Imperial’ is an album which has been highly anticipated amongst fans of the The Delines, made up of songwriter and novelist Willy Vlautin (formerly of Americana legends Richmond Fontaine) and vocalist Amy Boone with their band, Jenny Conlee, Sean Oldham and Tucker Jackson, since the release of their 2014 debut ‘Colfax’ which received universal acclaim amongst critics and the public alike and has been a long time coming after an accident which broke both of Boone’s legs and led to two years of surgery before finally being able to finish ‘The Imperial’ – a wait which has been more than worth it. The Delines head out on the road at the end of this month to promote latest release ‘The Imperial.’ Fans of the group will no doubt be excited at the prospect of seeing them since their last UK tour back in 2015. That lengthy hiatus is down to the horrific injuries sustained by lead singer, Amy Boone, shortly afterwards. She’s spent most of the last three years having extended treatment and rehab following a horrible car crash which caused both of her legs to be severely broken. The long-awaited follow up to ‘Colfax’ the sublime debut from The Delines, essentially a side project at the time for Richmond Fontaine’s head-honcho Willy Vlautin and The Damnations’ Amy Boone, finally sees the light of day after three years of delay due to a serious accident that rendered Boone suffering life changing injury. ‘The Imperial’ released in the UK in January on Decor Records, is not only testament to her powers of recovery but underlines Vlautin as one of America’s finest songwriters and observers of life’s downtrodden and emotionally wrought underbelly. The much-loved frontman of the now sadly defunct Richmond Fontaine and pivotal member of The Delines, Willy Vlautin is a man of many talents. Not only an exquisite songwriter, guitarist and one of the good guys, Vlautin has established himself as a ‘must read’ novelist whose tales of life’s chancers and dreamers have been cherished by readers and critics alike. Over for a short visit to these shores promoting his new book, ‘Don’t Skip Out On Me’ AUK’s Alan O’Hare caught up with him for a coffee and short chat.
