GRAMMY-winning singer-songwriter Grey DeLisle delivers a catchy new song and a fine vocal performance in her new single, There’s The Door. Once again, with lilting melody, precision, humour, and emotive character, DeLisle demonstrates that she possesses a perfect voice for country. The song is a tribute to George Jones, reimagining The Grand Tour from a woman’s perspective.
DeLisle says of the song and artfully shot video: “There’s The Door is my answer to George Jones’ The Grand Tour. I’ve always wanted to hear the woman’s side of that story! Directed by celebrated pin-up photographer Spike Marble at his home near Disneyland. We shot this video in about an hour because the sun was starting to go down, so we had to hurry. The hardest part was learning how to drive that ’62 Thunderbird!”
Produced by the late Andy Paley and completed by longtime collaborator Marvin Etzioni, DeLisle is set to release her latest album. The eleven-song collection, Don’t Turn Around, features a host of talented musicians, including Deke Dickerson, Old 97’s bassist Murry Hammond, Stephen McCarthy of The Long Ryders, Chris Scruggs, Tammy Rogers and Dave Alvin. These are personal, storytelling songs that explore what happens when people leave one another and follow new paths.
As a voice actor, DeLisle is well known for her work on series like Scooby-Doo and The Simpsons. While voicing characters for the long-running and ever-popular SpongeBob SquarePants, DeLisle developed a firm friendship with composer, songwriter, and producer Andy Paley, who had previously worked with the likes of Brian Wilson, Patti Smith, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Ramones. She told him that she was a songwriter herself and played him Don’t Turn Around. Paley immediately replied: “Oh my God! That’s great. I hate everything, and I love this.” After Paley’s death in November 2024, DeLisle turned to Etzioni for help in completing the project. He recalls hearing the title track: “I was sitting there crying like a child. I heard the finished record in my head.” Blending California roots, rockabilly and classic country sounds, this is one to enjoy.
