Pedal steel from rising star and recent denizen of Nashville, Conor Smith.” To add to the poignancy of a song that dwells on a downward spiral and an addiction that cannot be shaken ‘Sadie’ was also penned for Wilson’s mother in the last months of her life. It is achingly melancholic, and there’s no real balm – as is so often the case in real life.
Ross Wilson’s is the voice of sad experience. It’s a warm and human voice which I find very appealing. Life is a major addiction in its own right, filled with a seemingly endless variety of minor and major addictions from all of which the only real escape is actual death, not the mini-deaths on constant offer. I find it very interesting that he wrote it also for his mother, who heard it shortly before her death. That suggests a variety of story, doesn’t it. Good stuff.
