Video Premiere: Deray Barboros “Crooked Corners of Your Heart”

Here’s the latest single from Berlin-based Deray Barbaros.  ‘Crooked Corners of Your Heart’ is a song that reflects on the universal theme of heartbreak and sorrow, the experience of falling for someone who turns out not to be what you thought they were.  Trying to sustain love and letting go when it unravels can be challenging and full of despair; Barbaros captures these moods in this well-crafted, atmospheric ballad.

Barbaros delivers a beautiful vocal performance – her tone is warm and there’s a delicate, vulnerable flutter on the higher notes as she traces an engaging melody with her pure voice.  With lyrics of heartache and rich musical layers, including swooning pedal steel, mandolin, harmonica and double bass, ‘Crooked Corners of Your Heart’ is reminiscent of Patsy Kline and the classic country sound of yesteryear.

The good-humoured video, directed by Jamie Lenz-Collier, has a retro feel, shot in the style of a 1970s talk show with the twist that the host, audience and band are all dogs.  Indeed, that’s Deray’s dog playing the pedal steel, which is some trick.  The vintage styling reinforces the nostalgic mood and sound of the song, which has timeless quality.

Influenced by legends of country and folk, Barbaros aims to deliver tales of heartbreak and everyday life through a blend of styles.  She is currently working with the Famous Goldwatch Studios in Berlin and we hope to see her debut EP, ‘The Weight We Carry’, soon. Enjoy.
