Steve Earle & Reckless Kelly “Bad Girls” – never sad girls

Today’s song finds two titans of Outlaw country turning Wham on their heads and instead of boasting about their own bad boy status find that they are hankering after some of the girls (we’re thinking they probably mean women but found it didn’t scan so well) they knew before, ones who had a glint in their eye and an ice pick to break the hardest heart. Tough, mean, hard drinkin’ and fiercely and proudly independent – not requiring men to define their life parameters. Those kinds of girls. Women.

Recorded in Austin’s legendary Arlyn Studios, the track is the first of two singles scheduled for release this summer. The idea to record together was sparked by a run of unforgettable joint shows. As Earle explains, “Playing these shows together the last couple of summers has been such a blast, we just thought it needed to be documented in the studio.”

Cody Braun of Reckless Kelly adds, “In 2004, we recorded two tracks with Steve at his and Ray Kennedy’s studio in Nashville for tribute albums honoring Warren Zevon and Alejandro Escovedo. We had a great time and hoped to do it again someday. Here we are, 21 years later, doing just that.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
