Minneapolis singer-songwriter Katy Tessman delivers her new video via Americana UK. The atmospheric ‘Ghost Ranch’, featuring ethereal backing vocals and languid guitar twanging in the desert heat, is built around Tessman’s striking country voice – it’s a classic, pure vocal performance.
The accompanying video features the dramatic desert landscapes and stunning rock formations of Abiquiú, New Mexico. It’s a bleak, rugged backdrop to the cinematic scenes, which were shot by Sean Montoya, film student at Santa Fe Community College. Tessman wanted to connect to, and collaborate with, an ambitious, emerging filmmaker. During filming, Tessman says: “The landscape itself feels like another character in the story, pulling the listener and viewer deeper into the song’s spirit.”
Montoya adds: “‘Ghost Ranch’ has an intensity that resonates with the Southwest’s vast, unforgiving beauty. It was an honor to collaborate with Katy and create a visual companion to her music.” In the video, Tessman struggles with the intense internal conflict and emotional toll of creativity, reflecting the song’s heartfelt words.
The single is taken from Tessman’s latest album, “Turnbuckles”. Before parenthood, Tessman was a regular headliner on the music scene in the Twin Cities. Following a 20-year break from performing, she returned with new songs and renewed energy in 2023 with the album “Fly”. Over the years, Tessman continued to be creative and wrote an award-winning children’s book, entitled ‘Our Mama is a Beautiful Garden’. Now, as she turns her attention to music once again, Tessman – a survivor of breast cancer – has put together an optimistic collection of songs full of resilience, courage and hope. Enjoy.
