Carolina is a person that Liv Wade clearly wants to avoid, and Liv Wade makes clear that to do so allows her to be “free to be myself and not afraid to tell the truth.” For Wade there is also a stronger message to this gently powerful folk song from her new five song release Fur Queen. As a queer, two-spirit artist with Metis roots, Toronto based Liv Wade has long advocated for diversity, equity, equality and inclusion – and that’s the subtext to the song, a stand against those recent global political agendas that have taken away the fundamental rights of many individuals.
As Liv Wade explains: “We tried to showcase how cruel and calculated people can be, perpetuating lateral violence against each other, while calling out the cowardliness of individuals behind closed doors and screens, passing judgement without understanding layers of complexity and intersectionality. On the flip side we also wanted to highlight those folks pushing back, celebrating diversity, joining in solidarity, healing in community and not letting others’ insecurities determine their worth.”
