The Legendary Trainhoppers “A Conspiracy of Ravens”

Independent, 2026

The new Legendary Trainhoppers is a foray into studied presence and simple things cherished

Indiana based band The Legendary Trainhoppers have been at it since their 2006 release, Ramble On. This latest release, A Conspiracy of Ravens, is the product of both a creative outburst and a longer, studied approach. While most of the songs were finished during a weekend-long retreat in the countryside, the actual recording process was drawn out over the course of 16 months. This brought about a change in sound: while previous releases had more of a live feel, in A Conspiracy of Ravens, according to guitarist and band member Matt Kelley: “We were diligent, meticulous and intentional at every stage, and are thrilled with the ways this album is distinct and singular in our recorded material to date.”

The result is an album that varies in tone, ranging from playful to earnest in subject matter (yes, there’s a song about a sandwich), but also which incorporates different arrangement styles that take an americana core and infuse it with unexpected elements. The opening track, Feather Valley Sunset, is tinged with a fairly intentional-sounding Beatles/Monkees piano and other hints of 60s psychedelia. The single, Loneliness is a Crowded Train, is at its best when it fully delivers itself to the psychedelic guitars that come in and fully wrench our favour throughout. Carrying a Tune, a straightforward country song, is similarly taken over by an arresting guitar that elevates the experience.

If there’s anything to take issue with, it might be that we found ourselves hoping for more lead vocals from guest singer Cassie Beer. All in all, A Conspiracy of Ravens is an album where attention to detail paid off.
