Here is the sort of song that makes you tap your feet and smile. Upbeat and uplifting, ‘Line My Casket with Cannoli’ from Dwayne Haggins is full of humour and genuine warmth. It also features some fabulous finger-work on the guitars from both Haggins and guest Ahren Shreeve. Dublin-based Aisling Rafferty provides excellent backing, her voice elevating, and blending perfectly with, Haggins’ own distinctive vocal. The song was inspired by Haggins’ favourite pastry, as he explains: “After having shot a music video earlier in the day, I went home inspired to write an entire country, blues picking album…and ‘…Cannoli’ was the first song that came out and it was instant. Truth is I was probably longing for sweets when I wrote the song.”
Haggins’ early career took a boost when Bruce Marshall, a local music legend formerly of the Toy Caldwell Band, spotted him. He was impressed enough to take Haggins under his wing and to introduce him to a local promoter. With his first album due out later this year, Haggins is gaining momentum and has just participated in Joe Bonamassa’s ‘Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea’ concert cruise alongside the likes of Keb’ Mo’. The Massachusetts singer-songwriter will be one to watch out for in the future. In the meantime, enjoy his debut single.
