Who’s That is the latest atmospheric single from The War On Drugs. Typically hypnotic and immersive, the song is full of complex sonic textures, layers of sound that shift and grow and swell. The intensity builds around band leader Adam Granduciel’s fluent, swirling keys and dramatic guitar work. Pulsing drums from Anthony LaMarca and Dave Hartley’s bass fill out the sound and reinforce the rising, anthemic quality of Who’s That. Granduciel’s words are a stream of thoughts about anxiety amidst forces we can’t control: “And kept running from a memory // Of living through the same thing… There’s a fire burning just there out of reach // I keep moving through the revolving doors //It’s only my depression, baby // Where do I belong? // Will it change with time?” Directed by Max Flick, the video mirrors the mood of the song as Granduciel wanders the streets of Burbank at night.
Granduciel says of the song: “Who’s That was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop-off. It’s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can’t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self-doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.”
Written and produced by Granduciel, this is the first new recording from The War On Drugs since 2022. However, the band have been busy touring the world and putting out the live album Live Drugs (Again) in 2024. Granduciel also co-produced and performed on Sam Fender’s Mercury Prize-winning 2025 album People Watching. We’re looking forward to more intensive and atmospheric new material from the absorbing The War On Drugs.
