Molly & Me is the latest single from the upcoming album from Margo Cilker, Little White Cross, which is out on October 9th via Fossil Records. Molly & Me starts out as a story about a teenage friendship which rapidly takes a darker turn as the new friend’s brother dies in a mass shooting that he initiated. It’s not just news that’s here and then gone – the ramifications continue to blight a small community left to their shock.
It’s the other side of gun culture that many don’t like to talk about; however, Cilker is unbending, saying, simply, honestly, and abundantly obviously, “Just because something horrible happens time and time again, that doesn’t make it any less horrible.” The song does act, in some ways, as a personal catharsis, as Cilker explains: “I often feel haunted by stories, kept up at night by a kind of external pressure to tell them. I’ll write a song just to alleviate the grip it has on me.”
