The absolutely exquisite in every sense of the word Darlingside are returning to the UK at the end of this month to play headline shows – just 3 of them but they’re well spaced out, taking place as they are in Edinburgh, Manchester and London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Their third album ‘Extralife’ was released in February via More Doug Records/Thirty Tigers, which found the band looking to the future, mourning the loss of our world with an almost post-apocalyptic view. While the subject matter may seem bleak, ‘Extralife’ is not without an underlying sense of hope and optimism which let’s face it we could do with some of at the moment.
The record has picked up support from the likes of American Songwriter (“If you’re hard on the lookout for the next band you’re going to fall for, your search can end with Darlingside”), The Independent (“glorious harmonies which recall the uplifting hymnal polyphony of Fleet Foxes or American Beauty-era Dead”) and The Times (“Darlingside have a killer one-two punch –exquisite harmonies and dazzling charm”) Hey, like a monkey with a typewriter even Murdoch’s papers can print something truthful every so often. And us! Absolutely outrageously we don’t get quoted in the press release, a clerical error we can only assume but we described it back in March as “Hypnotic and beguiling post-apocalyptic, harmonic alt-folk.”
Darlingside have also recently partnered with Spotify to release a ‘Spotify Singles’ collection, feature a live version of Extralife album track ‘Hold Your Head Up High’ and a live cover version of the Muse single ‘Knights Of Cydonia’. Here they are, along with the dates, plus an incredible version of an incredible song from the same album, ‘Singularity’.
