Here is the wildly creative new video from John Murry, directed by actor Aidan Gillen. Gillen says of the visual: “I had this idea of John floating around my house – or did that happen in real life? Anyways, I liked the idea of a John puppet floating around upside down and mentioned this to him. His ex had made this puppet with an uncanny likeness and I used whatever technology I had to hand to try and make something that looked nice for the puppet part. I mean, it’s not all in focus, but there’s a bit too much of that these days.”
Featuring a strong beat, warm bass and Murry’s terrifically distinctive vocal, ‘Oscar Wilde (Came Here to Make Fun of You)’ finds Murry in excellent form, wrapping a lovely melody around typically ingenious lyrics. There’s dark humour here, but it’s shot through with a sense of violence and discomfort. Murry’s troubled upbringing, including undiagnosed autism and heroin addiction, is well-known. Once again, Murry manages to channel those feelings and that past into engagingly honest and challenging music.
Murry has just announced that a new album, the brilliantly titled ‘The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes’, is due for release on 26th June. After two critically-acclaimed albums, and on the strength of this utterly absorbing single, this is genuinely something to look forward to during these troubled times.
