We music-lovers have missed live shows over the last year. However, one of the genuine highlights of recent months has been the explosion in online gigs and the way that artists and promoters have increasingly used technology to connect with fans. If you are willing to stay up a little late and are looking for a way to spend your Saturday night, then look no further than the livestream of Dawes’ Wylie Gelber and Griffin Goldsmith via Bahamas Music. Canadian musician Bahamas (AKA Afie Jurvanen) is hosting a series of bi-weekly live sessions called ‘Live To Tape’, in which he showcases the performances of his outstanding musical friends.
Acclaimed artist Bahamas has released five commercially and critically successful albums, including ‘Sad Hunk’ most recently. Altogether, his songs have amassed 330 million streams and counting, adding around 9 million more each month. That’s quite a following. Bahamas’ work has been recognised in the music community, picking up Juno Awards for his albums ‘Earthtones’ and ‘Bahamas is Afie’ and a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical in 2019. So, it’s no surprise that Bahamas can pull in some excellent guests for his livestream shows. Recent ‘Live to Tape’ shows have included The 400 Unit, The Teskey Brothers and Sam Weber.
Now, Americana UK is delighted to partner with Bahamas to host this live-to-tape livestream with members from AUK-favourites Dawes. If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing Dawes in concert, then you’ll know that they are an expertly engaging band of note-perfect performers… as I type, I’m reminiscing about leaning on the stage in my Dawes T-shirt at Hard Rock Calling in London 2012…
Dawes worked with Grammy-winning Dave Cobb at Nashville’s RCA studio A on latest album ‘Good Luck with Whatever’, described in our review as: “A powerful collection, delivered with great style and panache.” This was the seventh studio album from the seasoned performers. For the uninitiated, Dawes’ music is sometimes sensitive, sometimes features rocking riffs, but is always melodic, thoughtful and powerful. With Griffin Goldsmith (drums), Wylie Gelber (bass), Lee Pardini (keys) and Tyler Goldsmith on guitar and vocals, Dawes are a tight, cohesive unit. Goldsmith’s songcraft is outstanding and his voice possesses an engaging vulnerability. If the band are new to you, then I guarantee that this livestream will send you travelling through time to check out their back-catalogue. Each album is different as the band have never stood still, so there is great pleasure to be had in following the development of Dawes chronologically, starting with 2009’s ‘North Hills’.
We at AUK are pleased to play a part in bringing you a great show. The link below will countdown to the gig at midnight on Saturday 10th April. In the comfort of home, click, sit back and enjoy Dawes in concert.
