Spencer Cullum is a Nashville Cat who is much in demand – in this case he’s a pedal steel cat and he’s played on recordings for the likes of Kesha, Dolly Parton, Deer Tick and Miranda Lambert. Now he’s released his own debut album, ‘Coin Collection.’ Today’s song is a not of this world folk tale of the love for a mountain flower and the ends that must be braved to achieve an eternal union of love. It sounds weird, it is weird, but it also sounds great – in no small part thanks to the presence of Erin Rae on vocals. And if it sounds a little like a throwback to that strange blend of folk and rock that characterised late 60’s/early 70’s English electric folk then that’s no accident either as Cullum explains “I wanted to write a very quintessential English folk record, but with really good Nashville players.” Mission accomplished.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
I thought this was written by Moondog? He released a version in 1978
