Something for the weekend: “Ae Fond Kiss” from the soundtrack to “Our Ladies”

Well that’s it for us for another week dear reader. We’re off to the Moseley Folk Fest to hopefully avoid a briefly forecast thunderstorm and enjoy the pleasures of The Waterboys, Passenger and Emily Barker among others (while preferably avoiding Jess Phillips, you can’t have it all!) Other festivals are of course available. We leave you with a song taken from the terrific new movie ‘Our Ladies’ which came out last week – set in the 1990s, it’s about a group of Catholic school girls who get an opportunity to go to Edinburgh for a choir competition and basically mayhem ensues.

‘Ae Fond Kiss’ is of course one of Rabbie Burns’ best-known love songs, which he originally wrote after the end of a platonic relationship with Agnes Maclehose in Edinburgh. It’s been covered in recent times by many artists including Eddie Reader, but this version from the film, a reprise of the full choir version in the same movie, brought me to tears in the middle of the Everyman cinema with no warning at all. If anyone knows who the singer is, please let us know in the comments. Have a good one.

Thanks, Mark. That is a very beautiful rendition of a very beautiful song. The film sounds good, too. 👍

Hi Mark

I agree it’s a beautiful version and according to this it’s performed by Marli Siu who plays Kylah in the film.

Pretty sure the singer is Marli Siu, a Scottish actress who played Kylah in the film. It’s a stunning rendition of it.

Ha! I hadn’t seen Malcom’s post before sent mine! Great minds and all that. Or in my case, some judicious use of Google!
