Clint’s Classic Clips: The Mavericks “What A Crying Shame” – Live on Later with Jools Holland, 1994

Fabulous TV performance from a wonderful band still going strong.

This month I should have been looking forward to seeing The Mavericks play live in Manchester. However, due to the uncertainties thrown up by the pandemic, it has been postponed until September of 2022. Looking at that crossed out date on the calendar got me thinking about the first time I saw them back in 1994 touring their third album ‘What A Crying Shame’ At that time they were still relatively unknown and pre-internet I went along on the basis of good reviews and pre-tour publicity. Their performance at what is now Manchester Academy 2, but at that time bore the somewhat grander title of The Manchester University Main Debating Hall, was near perfect and set me off on a close relationship with the band that has endured ever since.

The clip I’ve chosen this week was also recorded in 1994 during the same visit to these shores. It features the title track of the ‘What a Crying Shame’ album, probably my favourite Mavericks album – but that’s for a different feature, another time.

My idea of a perfect day would be a new record arriving in the post in the morning, watching Ipswich Town win in the afternoon followed by a gig and a pint with my mates at night,
