Check out the new single from Low Lily – a beautifully performed cover of Shawn Colvin’s hit ‘Round of Blues’. The Vermont-based band display excellent musicianship, with Flynn Cohen’s gorgeous acoustic guitar-work going back and forth in a musical dance with Lissa Schneckenburger’s exquisite fiddle. The pair’s singing voices also combine perfectly with Liz Simmons’s smooth vocal over her rhythmic strum. The end result is a great version of a much-loved song; the band own it but pay their respects to the original. Dirk Powell, known for his work with the likes of Tim O’Brien, Joan Baez and Bruce Springsteen, provides upright bass, electric guitar and percussion as well as taking on production duties and he contributes to a full, rich sound.
The video mirrors the lyrics in the way the black and white picture slowly transforms into full-colour and back again as Low Lily perform on an old abandoned highway in Newburyport, just as the song refers to a, “…lost highway.” What’s most delightful abut the video is watching, and feeling part of, the band’s simple joy in playing and singing together, drawing from one another and being lost in the music.
Low Lily are no strangers to the UK, having performed at Maverick, Celtic Connections and Ely Folk Festival in the past. We can look forward to more new material from the trio later in 2022 with Powell confirmed as producer for the full album project. In the meantime, enjoy Low Lily’s take on ‘Round of Blues’.
