Austin, TX honky-tonker Dale Watson is coming to the UK for select November dates on the heels of his new live album, Live at the Big T Roadhouse, Chicken S#!+ Bingo Sunday. The album is out now is the followup to his Lloyd Maines-produced studio album, Call Me Insane. Live at the Big T … is a perfect snapshot of Watson and his ace band, His Lonestars, live in concert at the peak of their performing prowess, all while hosting a Chicken S#!+ Bingo show at Dale’s own bar, the Big T Roadhouse in St. Hedwig, Texas. A reminder of that rather fine festival from a few years back comes by way of some nice news from Uncut who report: “A special edition of Bob Dylan’s No Direction Home is being released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the documentary. The Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition contains over two hours of never before seen footage and interviews; it is also the first time the film has been made available on Blu-ray and digitally. Following the success of 2016’s inaugural Awards, the AMA-UK (not to be confused with AUK, which people often do) has announced that the second annual UK Americana Awards ceremony will take place at London’s St John at Hackney music venue on Thursday 2 February as part of a two-day event which will also include an evening of showcases on Wednesday 1 February in various venues around Hackney and daytime conferences on both days. Apparently to try and categorise Johnny Dowd – Ithaca, New York’s legendary idiosyncratic genius – is like “trying to hold back a hurricane with a windbreak. It’s just not possible or indeed beneficial. To do so would be foolhardy , to say the least.” If anyone has tried, do drop us a line. Anyway you can read our review of his new album “Execute American Folklore” here or find out for yourself when he hits the UK in a couple of weeks for a string of dates. With apologies to those readers who complained that the previous incarnation of AUK was like a Neil Young fan site. Uncut reports: “Neil Young has debuted four new songs live during the same show. Young and The Promise Of The Real played Telluride Town Park, Telluride, Colorado on Friday, September 30. During the set, they unveiled four songs, which Sugar Mountain – the website that documents Young’s setlists – has listed as being called “Hang Gliders“, “Texas Rangers“, “Peace Trail” and “Show Me“. You can watch “Show Me” below. Continue reading “Neil Young Debuts Four New Songs at Show – Watch”
Gillian Welch’s groundbreaking album Revival was released twenty years ago and to commemorate the anniversary, Welch’s own Acony Records will release Boots No 1: The Official Revival Bootleg on November 25. Personally curated and produced by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, they worked alongside archivist Glen Chausse to mine selections from their extensive vault of analog tape recordings. The two-disc set will feature 8 previously unreleased songs, and include 21 outtakes, alternate versions, and demos from the making of the album such as the earliest home demo of “Orphan Girl” which was recorded on a four track and the rarity “Georgia Road,” a song that was only performed live once. We raved rabidly about his last album so expecting big things from this. Courtesy of Rolling Stone who report: “For any artist, quitting a day job to pursue art full-time represents a huge leap of faith. It’s even more potentially fraught in music, a profession that tends to involve prolonged stretches of travel and absence from loved ones. Against this backdrop, the title track to Hiss Golden Messenger’s new album Heart Like a Levee (due out October 7th on Merge Records) truly cuts like a knife. (Listen to the full album below.) On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band took the stage for the very last time at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco. For the show, aptly billed as The Last Waltz, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson were joined by an all-star group of music pioneers, including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, among others. The evening was captured on film by director Martin Scorsese. Released theatrically in April 1978 to critical acclaim, The Last Waltz is still considered by many to be the greatest concert film ever made. Passenger has posted a nice little song (which is actually pretty funny – “If I hit number one I’m hoping I can show that I’ve got more songs than Let Her fucking Go”) he wrote about battling the Boss for the number one spot here – all will be revealed tomorrow! The album is also heading for number one in Germany, New Zealand and Australia. It is absolutely cracking in case we haven’t mentioned it before.
