In it’s 250 year anniversary, Charlotte Morris proffers a few questions and thoughts on what it means to be patriotic: is there just one way to love your country, does it involve blind adherence to leaders and denial of facts if that is what is demanded of one? Should it involve book bans? Should it be all about control of others? Is that what the Declaration of Independence meant by: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Make America is the Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter’s response to these questions. Charlotte Morris shares her thoughts on the song, saying: “Make America was born from questions I find myself constantly asking: is THIS really what they meant by ‘great’? What did ‘great’ ever mean in the first place? While the song is rooted in frustration, it’s ultimately driven by hope. The chorus isn’t a declaration, but a question.”
Charlotte Morris’ music is a blending of folk and americana and draws on her roots in classical music and musical theatre, and a solid grounding in the folk revival movement of the 1960s and 70s.
