Louien “None Of My Words” (Jansen Records, 2019)

Live Miranda Solberg is one-quarter of Silver Lining, the Norwegian americana band reviewed on these pages last year and now gaining attention as a solo artist in her own right. Indeed, following on from a Soundcloud demo upload, Solberg found herself playing Norway’s two largest festivals and receiving all kinds of well-earned accolades. Very much based around the themes of mourning and grief following the loss of her father, ‘None Of My Words‘ also explores how those emotions can allow for human growth.

The diversity on offer within these nine tracks is what sets them apart. The simplicity of the lyrics is often a strength and the contrast in musical styles offers a wide range. ‘I Follow You’ immediately sets the Scandinavian tone – that vocal range that’s impossible to mistake. ‘Broken Heart Love’ is a stand out track, tragic and beautiful while ‘The Fool’ has a country fingerstyle arrangement reminiscent of Emmylou Harris. The title track showcases some nice folk electric guitar work while telling the tale of Solberg’s father. The album closes with the Soundcloud ‘Demo No 1’ which first gained all the attention in the first place and yes, all the usual soundbites DO apply to ‘None Of My Words’ ie “spellbinding, ethereal etc…”.
