Other Brother Darryl “The ballad of Joni and Graham” – Laurel Canyon times

On this latest single from Other Brother Darryl we find ourselves in an interesting place as the seven piece Other Brother Darryl look back to a simpler time which is embodied, for them, in the love story of Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash.  There are ‘Our House‘ nods to be found in this warm ballad which has at its heart a sense of loss of something special – a time when communications were in a physical form, a time when laughs were had together.  “Look at this life we’re living, are we getting it right?” is both a question between the famous couple, and a challenge to the ephemeral feeling of much of modern life.

The Ballad of Joni and Graham‘ was written during this time of year one night, amongst a tempo of chirping crickets. Dan Nicklin, along with bandmate Dan Cederholm hammering away on his banjo, arranged the idea while sitting outside. The first version was originally released in demo form along with the band’s debut single ‘Until I Do’ in November, 2022.  Fallen bandmate Dave Mirabella appeared on the prior version along with Nicklin, Nate and Dan. Featuring the band’s original quartet, circled around one microphone at their recording studio, Henley Row. This full band version includes band members Chad Raleigh on pedal steel, Derek Feeney on acoustic guitar, Jim Collins on bass and vocals, Dave Lieb on piano and vocals, and Matt Odabashian on organ.

Other Brother Darryl will release their debut album ‘Roll Shine Roll‘ in February 2025

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
