The 20th annual Glasgow Americana festival will take place at various places around the city between 30th September and 4th October with a mixture of some familiar and new faces. There will be over 50 musicians performing for the annual Americana Extravaganza which will take place in Cottiers, The Glad Cafe, Saint Lukes, the Rum Shack and The Red Door Club.
Opening night music comes from legendary American singer song writer James McMurtry who takes the stage at Saint Lukes on Wednesday 30th September. Fellow American Dar Williams makes her first Glasgow appearance in nearly ten years on the back of her new album Humming Bird Highway – You can catch Dar on Thursday 1st October in Cottiers Theatre. On the same night over in the South-Side, The Rum Shack will be packed with Scottish talent when The Black Denims and Rain of Animals perform.
Kevin Morris, promoter, enthusiastically told us more about the rest of the week: “We’re not entirely sure how it’s taken us this long to bring Portland, Oregon’s The Delines to Glasgow Americana, but our 20th anniversary felt like the perfect moment. Their fans are sure to pack out The Debating Chamber at Glasgow University on Friday 1st October.
On the same night, head over to The Red Door Club (The Old Toll Bar), where we’re teaming up with Gathering South Sessions for an evening of even more outstanding Scottish talent. Edinburgh’s five‑piece roots band Sociograss and singer‑songwriter Kate Kyle join us for an intimate, up‑close performance.
Playing The Glad Cafe on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd October will be the extremely talent Scottish modern day troubadour Harry Bird. His band of foot stomping folkies features Scottish-Australian bluegrass maestros Pepita Emmerichs and Theodore Barnard (Rain of Animals / Good Guy Hank) along with powerhouse Dundee songwriter Gavin McGinty (GAVIN / Sinderins) and globetrotting Scottish-Icelandic drummer Signy Jakobsdottir.
On the Saturday evening in Partickhill Bowling Club we have an incredible double header with the Annie Keating Band and The Dreaming Spires. This show is sure to be on the many highlights at this years festival.
Our now‑renowned Americana Sunday on 4 October is shaping up to be one of our strongest yet. The Coaltown Daisies, long-time favourites from Fife, return to our festival with a Matinee Show at The Glad Cafe — and it’s sure to be a full house. Keeping the Fife theme alive, we’re delighted to have the wonderful Kirkcaldy-based singer‑songwriter Robyn Smith opening the afternoon. As we draw the curtain on our 20th Anniversary, we’re thrilled to welcome back Austin, Texas icon Darden Smith, performing highlights from his rich and compelling back catalogue in The Glad Cafe.”
