Mini-Gig: Pete Gow & Joe Bennett “Storm Windows” (John Prine Tribute)

We’re all missing live music at the moment.  We have been trying to fill that void with regular ‘mini-gigs’.  Great artists have been sharing performances recorded at home as they adapt to the same lockdown restrictions as you and me.  Today’s show is a beautiful performance from virtual duo, Pete Gow and Joe Bennett (The Dreaming Spires, Bennett Wilson Poole, Co-Pilgrim and more…), expertly put together while separate from one another.  Continue reading “Mini-Gig: Pete Gow & Joe Bennett “Storm Windows” (John Prine Tribute)”

Interview: Clubhouse Record’s Tristan Tipping celebrates ten years for one of the UK’s premier roots labels

Brothers Tristan and Danny Tipping set up Clubhouse Records ten years ago when Americana was considered Alt.County and plaid was still worn underneath your jacket to avoid tough questioning. That, a decade later, Clubhouse is considered one of the UK’s best roots labels that has provided the launchpad here in the UK and Europe for likes of Cale Tyson, Erin Rae, Don Gallardo alongside much-loved roots renegades, Redlands Palomino Company, is some achievement. Americana-UK catches up with Tristan to get to the nitty-gritty of what it takes to make the Clubhouse run smoothly and yet still be fun. Clubhouse Records turns 10 – listen to their Spotify playlist

One of the UK’s best Americana labels Clubhouse Records, a constant friend here at AUK, turns 10 years old this year and the team there have each picked 10 of our favourite tracks from the Clubhouse catalogue over the last decade and put together a playlist to share far and wide.  Head of label Tristan Tipping told us: “Hatched over a bottle of red wine at a late-night jam over a decade ago, Clubhouse Records was a seed of an idea for a collective, supportive, musical project that’s grown and endured far longer than we could have imagined. It’s been tremendous fun and we’ve made life long friends along the way! Continue reading “Clubhouse Records turns 10 – listen to their Spotify playlist”

Pete Gow “The Fragile Line” (Clubhouse Records, 2020)

When, almost a year ago, a colleague on this esteemed website reviewed Pete Gow’s debut solo album ‘Here There’s No Sirens’ the only possible criticism to emerge from what was, in the main, a glowing review, was the fact that the album was “a little one note in terms of pace….with no rocky number to break the tension.”

Interview: Pete Gow – “Up close and very personal…”

Pete Gow, front man for the late Case Hardin, one of the UK’s foremost hard rocking Americana styled bands, surprised a lot of folk when he released his first solo album, ‘Here There’s No Sirens’ back in April. Gone was the rollicking and hard rocking thrust of Case Hardin, replaced by intimate stripped back songs, mainly acoustic and awash with bold brass and string arrangements. And while the sound of the album may have surprised many folk, it was praised across the board, with AUK’s review saying it was, “a deeply personal and intimate set of songs with some great lyrics and astute musicianship, all recorded wonderfully and delivered with heart.”  Already, in some quarters, it’s been mentioned as likely to be in the short list for UK album of the year at the next AMAUK awards ceremony.
