Music should have an emotional impact. It should move you. With her latest single, Charlotte Morris offers a direct and open-hearted autobiographical song about the effect of a relationship unravelling on the innocent children involved. ‘Love Ain’t Real’ is disarming and raw and exposing. Lyrically, it’s direct and powerfully emotive. Musically, ‘Love Ain’t Real’ features warm guitar and builds steadily with layers of keys and strings as Morris delivers a memorable melody with her pure, clear voice. The video, directed by Will Gawley of Charlotte Avenue Pictures, reinforces the heartache of the song’s lyrics, with actors portraying the reality of Charlotte’s parents splitting up. Again, it is has the authenticity of art that is influenced by real trauma.
Morris explains the inspiration behind the song and video: “While all of the songs off my new album, ‘Wild Child’, are autobiographical and mean a lot to me, ‘Love Ain’t Real’ is definitely one of the most vulnerable of the bunch. The song really dives into what my childhood and high school years were like living as the child of divorce, and because of that, filming the music video was pretty tough at times. We cast 2 girls to play me at 12 and me at 17, and watching them basically act out my life and my struggle was both painful and overwhelmingly cathartic. I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit nervous for this video to release, as it leaves little to the imagination about my experiences. However, I know that this is something that so many people have gone through and grappled with, so I’m also hopeful the video can make its way to the people who need it and offer a form of closure, peace, and hope.”
A talented multi-instrumentalist, Charlotte Morris began learning the violin at 4 years old and taught herself a range of instruments, including guitar, piano, ukulele, banjo, acoustic bass guitar and mandolin. By the age of 12, she was writing songs and has since released a series of singles and EPs, with her first full-length album, ‘Song’s for My Next Ex’, coming in 2020. ‘Love Ain’t Real’ is taken from Morris’s brand new album ‘Wild Child’, a collection of personal songs and intimate reflections.
