Video Premiere: Dan Tyminski “Hey Brother”

We are delighted to premiere the latest single from 14-time GRAMMY-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dan Tyminski.  His new version of ‘Hey Brother’ is an absolute joy from start to finish.  Lyrically, it’s a song of sibling love: “Hey brother // There’s an endless road to rediscover // Hey sister // Know that water’s sweet, but blood is thicker // Oh, if the sky comes falling down For you // There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do.”  The poetic words are direct and, with Tyminski’s characterful voice, they are heartfelt and authentic.  Like a fierce and protective love, ‘Hey Brother’ is musically urgent, insistent and full of compelling energy, leaving no doubts and becoming more impactful with each listen.

The original ‘Hey Brother’ was a huge hit with Swedish DJ Avicii, having been streamed in excess of a billion times.  This new version transforms it into an Americana anthem.  The blend of instruments is an Americana-dream and the astonishingly talented players in his band soar together.  There are simply gorgeous, breathtaking interludes on Harry Clark’s mandolin, Maddie Denton’s fiddle and Gaven Largent’s Dobro, which is just stunning. It’a all underpinned by Jason Davis’s fast fingers on banjo and the propulsive, rhythmic bass from Grace Davis.  The Ryan Nolan-directed video has an intimate warmth to it, a feeling that we’re right there with the band, able to focus on the startling quality of their musicianship.

You can buy ‘Hey Brother’ here.  The single is taken from Tyminski’s new album  ‘God Fearing Heathen’, which is due for release in June 2023.  On this evidence, it will be absolutely essential listening and an early candidate for the Americana album of the year.  It’s the follow-up to his gorgeous 2022 EP ‘One More Time Before You Go’, on which he was joined by the likes of Molly Tuttle and Jerry Douglas.  Dan Tyminski’s voice will be familiar to our readers as the male lead singer in Alison Krauss and Union Station and from ‘I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow’ from the film ‘Oh Brother, Where Art Thou’ alongside George Clooney.  He’s held in such high regard that Tyminski has also been awarded Male Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association four times.  This, dear readers, in a real treat – sit back and absorb and then do it again.

Great news that there’s a new album in the offing. Great performance too.

Dan included a live version of ‘Hey Brother’ on what I think was a download only EP, The Planetarium Sessions. I couldn’t find out where the performance took place.
