LA-based artist Jolie Holland will release her new album ‘Haunted Mountain‘ on October 6th, and today’s new song, a duet with friend and collaborator Buck Meek, is taken from it. ‘Highway 72‘ is a road-weary tune that features the gorgeous blend of Jolie Holland’s smokey twang and Buck’s Hank Williams-esque warble singing about the experience of living on the streets, asking folks for spare change, and sleeping under streetlights in concrete arroyos. It’s an autobiographical tale for Jolie who was brought up in a cult and escaped from it in her late teens – the escape, though, led to a period of five years of homelessness. It’s a negative thought for most people, but Jolie Holland sees it somewhat differently – it was a means of finding a community, realizing that you are an animal on this planet, and other realizations you can have by stepping outside of what we think of as “civilized life.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
Great song, compare & contrast with version released simultaneously by Buck Meek on his latest release.
