This is a fabulous performance of ‘I’ll Be Your Woman’ by white-soul band St. Paul and The Broken Bones, who are based in Birmingham, Alabama. You can see here (once you have got past the flute at the start) what an excellent, charismatic front-man Paul Janeway is, with his beautiful and passionate vocal performance. And if that wasn’t enough, he is backed by a wonderful set of musicians.
The band started when Janeway met bassist Jesse Phillips in the mid-2000s in the alternative soul outfit The Secret Dangers and immediately clicked. This track is from their second album, ‘Sea Of Noise’ which came after their excellent debut ‘Half The City’, released in 2014. Since then, they have released ‘Young Sick Camilla’, ‘The Alien Coast’ and, in 2023, ‘Angels In Science Fiction’. As the years have gone by, they have tried to progress their sound, experimenting with hip-hop and psychedelic rock, for example.
They have done lots of touring and have supported The Rolling Stones and played at festivals like Glastonbury and The Cambridge Folk Festival. Their live shows are fantastic; they are one of the best bands that I have ever seen in the flesh, with Janeway eventually ending up singing in the middle of the crowd. Don’t even think of missing them next time they come to the UK.
What a tight group, with or without Paul Janeway vocalising up a storm! I’ve been a fan of St Paul and the Broken bones for several years now. My advice? Ya gotta see them live at least once!

They are indeed a very tight band. I saw them at The Garage in Highbury when they played support to Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. You can imagine what a great gig that was
