Here’s the beautifully-written and performed new single from contemporary folk singer Hannah Scott. A step-parent to two children, Scott’s own life experiences influence the lyrical message of ‘Broken Homes’. It’s a thoughtful, thought-provoking challenge to the idea that staying together is always for the best. Being in a loving home can be more important and, as she sings, “Sometimes broken turns out to be better.” The difficult subject matter is handled sensitively. Ranging high and low, Scott’s vocal melody is simply gorgeous – her pure voice is captivating and really draws attention to her poetic words.
The video is beautifully animated, with images of sandcastles, plants shooting up from their roots and family relationships all reinforcing the song’s themes. Scott explains: “The video is animated with sand by Eleanor Giovanni and uses footage of me, my partner and my step-sons and of me and my sister with my late father. I was pleased we were able to include footage of him as part of the album deals with my grief after his passing.”
This is the second single from ‘Absence of Doubt’, the forthcoming album due out on 25th October. Scott co-produced the album with engineer and producer Adrian Hall (Tori Amos). A number of fine musicians have been involved in the process: drummer Geoff Holroyd (Feeder), bassist Matt Aston (Lucy Spraggan) and guitarist George Boomsma (Katherine Priddy). The result is an accomplished collection that offers a tuneful perspective on significant themes, such as love and loss, parenthood and grief. Check it out.
