Jenny Owen Youngs “Someone’s Ex” – you, me, them…everybody

This new single from Jenny Owen Youngs was recorded during the sessions for her most recent album ‘Avalanche.‘  It’s a dreamy love song with an undercurrent of anxiety as Youngs sings: “Everybody’s having fun / Hoping that it won’t end / Everybody says goodbye / Thinking they can stay friends.”  There’s a soft determination though to ensure that this time that won’t happen: “Everybody’s someone’s ex / I won’t let you be mine.

Jenny Owen Youngs says of the song: “This was the last song we recorded during our week of principal tracking at Isokon, and I think we were itching to dig in a bit harder than we had been, to let it rip a little.  We found this slightly more bombastic instrumental approach, compared to the rest of the album, but the vocals maintained the same mellow, more introspective colour of the other songs. When we got to the mastering stage, we knew we needed to cut one song from the eleven we had recorded, and sonically ‘Someone’s Ex’ just felt slightly to the left of the rest. I hated to leave it out, because the lyric is right in line with the album thematically: it’s about believing in love, about possibility, about holding on. I’m so happy it’s finally out in the world.

Someone’s Ex‘  was written by Youngs and Tom Peyton and, just one more thing – it’s time to use the phrase of the year – the song was produced by Josh Kaufman.  Busy man.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
