The latest release from Josh Tillman, also known as Father John Misty, is an absorbing seven-minute epic of a song. ‘Screamland’ is a richly layered, beautifully-crafted song that swells and surges in the chorus and as the song journeys towards its conclusion. Tillman is supported by a couple of really gifted collaborators: Alan Sparhawk from Low features on guitar and Drew Erickson contributes a gorgeous string arrangement. Together, they give ‘Screamland’ a tremendous, atmospheric depth of sound.
The video was directed and edited by Estefania Kröl, who says: “The video is a visual journey through the depths of ‘Screamland’, capturing the essence of both the music and the artists. Father John Misty blends seamlessly into the scene, becoming a part of the city, a living echo of ‘Screamland.'” The resulting visual is a moody collection of images and locations, night-time in the city, reinforcing the feel of the song effectively.
This single appears on the sixth Father John Misty album, ‘Mahashmashana’, which is due out on 22nd November 2024. He produced the album himself, alongside Drew Erickson and executive producer Jonathan Wilson. The follow-up to the well-received ‘Chloë and The Next 20th Century’ promises to be another melodic adventure. Look out for UK tour dates next spring. Enjoy.
