Icarus Phoenix “Poor Sad Indie Thing” – touching the beautiful sad thoughts

Ah, Icarus Phoenix – Drew Danburry is like the musical Juggernaut, an unstoppable force pushing through the world, only in this case not crushing down but lifting up – or, at the least, consoling.  ‘Poor Sad Indie Thing’ is a memory of something beautiful, as he explains: “Sometimes a moment of beauty stays with us. A moment that shines through brilliantly and sears itself into our brain.  We’re lucky to experience said moment. We recognize that. So we write it down. Document it. Save it for later.  We go back in our memory when times are hard. Something that gives life meaning. Purpose. Joy.  Well….times are hard.

And if that wasn’t enough to sell the song to you, fellow music enthusiast, this glistening, drifting, haunted song that drags at the heart also carries a hint of Mercury Rev circa ‘Deserter’s Songs‘, an elegant magical realism concoction.  It’s probably too soon to say that this is the best Icarus Phoenix song of the year, but it’s definitely one of them.

We’ll find out late Summer, because  Icarus Phoenix will be releasing a deluxe edition album, August 2025. Having recorded 40 songs in 3 days at June Audio (Provo, UT) with producer Jed Jones (Post Malone, The Killers) and recruiting the help of longtime friends Jake Bellows of the band Neva Dinova to play additional guitar, Justin Pacheco (bass), Andrew Young (drums), Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) and Rocky Cordray (Teleprom).  That’s assuming, of course, that Autumn and Winter don’t bring something equally new and magical – we wouldn’t bet against it.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
