B. Knox “The Many Deaths Of Rose Murphy” – murder, most foul

Canada’s B.Knox is someone who seems to pop up on Americana UK every two or three years, and then he lets us know that he’s got an excellent new song out. And that’s the way it has worked today – with the musician who was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and currently living north of Toronto, Ontario, releasing an old school murder ballad which takes in all the keynotes of the song to tell a dark tale of abuse and murder.

B. Knox says of the song that: “I’m such a huge fan of old school murder ballads in that western and folk style, so I had to take a swing at writing one of my own, and thus ‘The Many Deaths Of Rose Murphy’ was born. It was recorded live in one take – just us singers and my acoustic guitar huddled around a couple of mics, much like it would have been done years ago. I think the lyrics and song speak for themselves, so I hope you have a few minutes to hear the story of Rose Murphy.” There’s an echoey intensity to the song, which Knox explains, saying: “This one was recorded live in one take, with only the pedal steel added afterwards – sung around a couple of mics, just like it would have been done years ago.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
