It’s been a while, in fact it has been a whiles – we speak of the tradition of running (when available) an instrumental on Wednesday afternoons. Why Wednesday afternoon? Well, it’s halfway through the week and we reckon that by now we could all do with just a wee rest from the relentless tonnage of lyrics. There are just so many words, words, between the lines of age that just a pause can be a calming balm. And the other while for which we have been a-waitin’? Bluegrass. You’ve noticed, we’ve noticed, there just hasn’t been as much bluegrass around here of late, and, well, that ends today. We’re going full MABA (Make Americana Bluegrass Again), the one populist movement we can happily sign up to.
So here we are with yet another contribution to the WABFTPBIO cause (obviously, that’s Wednesday Afternoon Bluegrass For The People But Instrumentals Only) with the latest from Rudy’s Bluegrass Revue. ‘Booger Red‘ is the third single from the band’s upcoming new album, and was inspired by band leader and banjoist Rudy Cortese’s childhood, as he explains: “When I was young, my brother and I loved the rodeo. We used to watch it on TV, and there was a cantankerous bull that was difficult to ride called ‘Booger Red.’ Later, when we worked with the rodeo in high school, I actually met one of those bulls. He had a mean streak for sure. Years later, I found out there were a few bulls that carried that name—each inspired by a fearless bronc rider from the 1940s who never met a horse he couldn’t ride. In honour of those tough hombres, I named this tune ‘Booger Red’—because it’s a little wild, a little ornery, and not easy to hang onto.”
So settle back, decompress, have a sip of tea (other beverages are available, but they aren’t as good) and relax as we all take a wild ride that’s not so easy to hang onto.
