Check out the latest single from West Sussex artist Serious Child, the musical moniker of Alan Young. Co-written with Neil Connor, ‘Veneer’ is simply gorgeous. The instrumentation is lush and layered, delicate and precise, including sweetly sliding violin from David Grubb. This fine musicianship is a compelling foundation for Young’s impressive voice, which winds through unexpected melodic paths, lifted by ethereal backing vocals from My Girl The River. The result is a timeless song to immerse yourself in.
Lyrical and poetic, ‘Veneer’ is about social camouflage and a character who has been pretending to be someone they’re not for so long that they have lost their true self. It’s an introspective exploration of identity and individuality. Artfully shot and beautifully choreographed, the video for ‘Veneer’ is richly absorbing, just like the music that it complements. With videography from Steve Brockerton of Shutterpoint, it is based on a visual concept and dance devised by Ellen Coleman, Kate Perry and Alan Young.
‘Veneer’ is the third single to be released from Serious Child’s brand new fourth studio album, “What Lies Beneath”. The follow-up to 2021’s “Talk About The Weather” is full of ambitious songwriting and memorable tunefulness. During the autumn, Serious Child has been touring the UK with My Girl The River, and there are more dates to come in February and March 2026. If you’re looking for excellent songcraft, sensitive writing and outstanding musicianship, then head here to get your tickets.
