TANASI “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” – that’d be nice

We’ve had to explain before, and it is usually in relation to George Harrison, that the Fab Four get a special dispensation to appear here on the virtual pages of Americana UK  due to their sharing a Liverpool connection with your favourite on-line music journal of note.  Sometimes Ringo helps us out by actually doing something if not alt- then at least -country: thanks Ringo, appreciate it.

However, today we’re not in any sort of dubious half-territory, because TANASI’s take on Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) has a more than adequate Appalachian feel mixed into it’s multiple “world music” mix.  TANASI descibe themselves as a worldgrass trio, they’re based in Asheville, North Carolina, and are in person Billy Cardine on dobro and slide instruments, Anya Hinkle on vocals and guitar, and Mary Lucey on vocals, upright bass, and clawhammer banjo.  Billy Cardine explains that the band decided to make a version of today’s song saying: “We learned this George Harrison song to play at our dear friends’ wedding, and recognizing the need for as many songs about love as possible, we pulled it into our repertoire.”  Speaking of the band Anya Hinkle adds that “To me, TANASI is Appalachian music without guardrails—a sound that’s a culmination of our ever-evolving, unconventional paths, shaped by unpredictable winds, formed by unexpected hands, and forged together with joyful, emergent strength.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
