Here’s the latest single from Portland, Oregon–based Brooklyn Del & The Revelators. You and I is a high-energy sonic blast that grabs your attention from the opening notes and doesn’t let go. There’s a wild sense of abandon and restlessness in Brooklyn Del’s fluent vocal delivery, her words spilling out in a flowing stream of consciousness. Halfway through, she really lets her voice go, flying loudly with surging spirit, before later slowing everything down for an atmospheric finish. It’s truly absorbing stuff.
Throughout You and I, Troi Richards’ urgent drumming is absolutely compelling, his powerful beats tumbling out and stirring up the musical ingredients supplied by Matt Starks and D. Rives Curtright on their tuneful, twanging electric guitars.
The single follows the band’s recent EP, Lights and Last Resorts, which showcases the musical blend of Del’s songwriting and the band’s experience, chemistry and captivating performance. Del explains: “The songs on this EP were written by me as a solo artist. As soon as I heard how their talents complemented this music, I knew we had to do more. I would never play the music that I write the way that they can play it, and they wouldn’t write music the way I write it.”
Del explains how the songs on Lights and Last Resorts convey contrasting feelings of desperation and resolution: “There is an underlying theme of making a last-ditch effort throughout a lot of the songs. The narrator is pleading and somewhat desperate early on, but as the song builds, so does the frustration, and the narrator’s perspective is much different. The EP came out better than I heard it in my head. Before it was recorded, the only reference I had of these songs were vocals and an acoustic guitar, but the band really brought it to life in a way I couldn’t have dreamed. If anyone is listening and enjoying the record, it feels like a success to me. The more we can share the record and play this music with this group, the better.”
Del and the band are currently in the studio working towards a full-length album. With songs like You and I, it promises to be a compelling listen. Look out for it. Meanwhile, get moving to this.
