Kris Drever “Doing This For Love” – anything, anything

Kris Drever – known for both his solo work and as part of Lau – returns with his first solo record in six years, and this is the title track from it.  It’s a song about gritty determination to carry on in hard times, keeping love arrive through the daily toil, work that is perhaps uninspiring but at lest pays, work that has to be chased and perhaps last just a few days, and work that takes one away from the ones you love as the only way of contributing to keeping that love housed and fed.  The practicalities of love, without flowers and sunny days running through spring meadows awash with flowers.

Doing This For Love is out now on The North Sound.  It features a band of carefully chosen collaborators with Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow) contributing drums, guitars, keys, and vocals, while long-time co-producer Euan Burton’s melodic bass brings rich depth to the sonic landscape. Rachel Sermanni is a guest vocalist on one track and vocalist Rachel Lightbody and old-time banjoist Cahalen Morrison round out an ensemble that orbits Drever’s songs with care and restraint, adding texture without ever obscuring the core.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
