Fruit Bats “That Goddamn Sun” – when will it be my time

It was all going so well, wasn’t it?  We had a theme – a great theme – running through this week’s Tracks and now we’ve gone and thrown it all away.  Alas.  Alack.  Oh well, let’s console ourselves by thinking that Fruit Bats is just too damn important to not feature as soon as possible and then again there is just a sneaky chance that there will be a Folk Tracks Roundup coming soon so we won’t be deprived of our hey-nonny-nonny quota for too long.

That Goddamn Sun is the latest single from The Landfill, which will be released on June 12th via Merge Records.   The song fits into that “waiting for real life to start” genre of song, as Eric D. Johnson explains: “Sometimes words don’t suffice, and a chorus ends up with none of them – this “ooooh” melody existed as a voice memo on my phone for a couple of years. It came to me in a large echo-y backstage tiled bathroom somewhere and then languished for a while. The rest of the song was developed during a writing session with my bandmates Kosta Galanopoulos and Josh Mease – we were playing and this old melody just slotted right in there. The lyrics are about something many have written about over the years – the ol’ ‘waiting for the sun to shine’ story.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
