Check out the infectious melodies and jangling guitar of the new single from the always-excellent The Hanging Stars. Let It Slide shimmers with light, bright twelve-string guitars and swirling, summery sounds. As ever, the band’s four-part harmonies are central to the song’s beautiful melody and timeless, dreamy feel. Although Let It Slide is a feel-good song, there’s an edge, a twist in the lyrics; the subject of the song is easy to like and hard to fight, so the narrator lets things go when treated badly: “The word on the street says you took what’s mine… You sold all my clothes for a cheap night out // The blues in your eyes takes me for a ride // You sweep me off my feet as I stumble inside // Drunk upon your charm and cheeky lines.”
The video, created by Michael Wood, has the same sun-bleached, endless summer vibe as the music. It includes footage from The Hanging Stars’ recording sessions at Clashnarrow Studios in Helmsdale, in the Scottish Highlands, owned and run by Edwyn Collins. It’s a magical environment for writing and recording, and the band describe it as, “…a sort of mixture between Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and the BBC’s Repair Shop.”
This is the latest single from the forthcoming album Just a Day, due out via Loose Music on 19th June 2026. Co-produced by Teenage Fanclub’s Gerard Love and Dexy’s Sean Read, the album was recorded in a single week in February 2025, using Edwyn Collins’ vintage equipment, including the Gretsch Blackhawk he used in his Orange Juice days and the Barnes & Mullins fuzz box. The band’s sound was stripped back to its essence before being rebuilt into these dreamily escapist songs that transport us far from our everyday reality. It promises to be one of the albums of the year.
