You may recall that a while ago we got all excited about using something from Massive Attack for the first time on the site. And if you do then you may also recall that it was a song on which they were collaborating with Tom Waits. And if you recall that then you may also recall that it was a song that made up one side of a single with the other side being a spoken word piece by Tom Waits. Well – that spoken word piece is called The Fly and it is that which we are featuring here today with no-one asking whether a spoken word track with zero music can actually count as a song and if it can’t is it then eligable for Tracks. To which we have two words for you – “Tom” and “Waits”. There’s a justification if ever I saw one.
Tom is a little more understanding than a lot of us for the house fly – “you’re handsome and thin, you try to blend in” are not words often addressed to the common eater of “cat shit“, but I guess that’s why Waits is a poet and us, well, on a good day we’re reportative prose.
