The visually stunning landscapes in ‘The Canyon’ are a good match for the soaring voice of Mackenzie Shivers. Directed by Ross Vedder, the video features Shivers trying to out-pace a real snowstorm in the Colorado Mountains in a 1969 Chevy Malibu. Shivers says: “We filmed this video where I wrote the song – in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The song is about moving forward, escaping the past, and drowning in something other than sorrow (in this case, the majesty of Mother Earth).
We were consistently trying to outrun the blizzard, changing our filming plans on the fly, trying out best not to slip on ice or disturb the family of deer that seemed semi-interested in watching us film (but much more interested in eating), always moving forward and upwards through the mountains.
Mother Nature had her way, and the blizzard arrived, helping shape the narrative of the entire video.” The song is taken from Shivers’ second album, 2019’s ‘The Unkindness’, which was mastered, engineered and mixed by Kevin Salem, known for his work with Bat for Lashes and Valerie June. Shivers is a classically trained pianist, who first started writing songs aged just four years old. This is beautiful stuff.
