It will be no surprise to anyone who knows Love Me in the Dark’s music that the couple’s vocal melodies and harmonies on ‘Circle Up the Wagons’ are beautiful. Five years ago, Steve McCormick and Heather Donavon met on stage and never looked back. Although used to writing and performing solo material, the couple began writing together and formed Love Me in the Dark. McCormick supported Donavon through a personally challenging time and wrote ‘Circle Up the Wagons’ as a tribute to her family, who were all coping with a crisis. The duo say of the song: “As of this writing, March 30th 2020, we are all watching our global landscape change. We are “Circling Up the Wagons” on multiple levels. Here in the US we are celebrating National Doctors Day. Our thoughts go out to them and all medical workers, on the front lines of this unprecedented crisis. The best songs work universally even if written for a specific event. Repurposed, they find new life and resonate far beyond the writers’ initial intentions. Hopefully “Circle Up the Wagons” is that kind of song. Written during one family crisis, now thankfully resolved, it seems to speak to this current one in an even larger and more meaningful way.
