Alex Rex “Scandalise The Birds” – psychfolk magnificence

Alex Rex is the recording name of Alex Neilson, who was the driving force behind the much missed Trembling Bells.  He’s released three albums as Alex Rex, and the fourth – ‘Paradise‘ is due out on July 30th.  ‘Scandalise the Birds‘ came out last week as a preview single – and yes those female vocals you can hear are Lavinia Blackwall, the first time the pair have recorded together since Trembling Bells went to static silence.

Lyrically Alex Rex is as obscure and intriguing in equal measure as ever as he declares “all my favourite trees are dead trees, contorted agonised and strange.”  It’s a blistering moment of guitar wailing psychfolk, designed to be heard at full volume and contemplated in reflective silence.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
