Here’s the latest single from the fabulous Cowboy Junkies. ‘Don’t Let it Bring You Down’ is from the brand new album ‘Songs of the Recollection’, which is a collection of well-chosen covers that are meaningful to members of the band. Guitarist Michael Timmins explains: “Long before we were musicians, we were music fans. This was the passion and experience that we shared. These are some of the songs and some of the artists that have found their way into our lives and repertoire.” The passion for these songs comes through in their performance. Each of the songs has been transformed into something new and distinctively, recognisably Cowboy Junkies and the result is already an album-of-the-year contender.
Many artists, including Annie Lennox, Seal, Everything Everything and Chris Cornell, have covered this classic Neil Young song either in live shows or on studio recordings. The core of the song is so strong that all these versions are excellent but this new interpretation by Cowboy Junkies is as powerful as any. Margo Timmins’ vocal is typically outstanding, soaring above crunching, distorted guitar, bass and forceful drums. The song builds on Michael’s searing guitar and the overall experience is intense.
Look out for the Junkies’ show at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 27th November. They will play two sets with no support act in what promises to be a great evening’s entertainment. Tickets are available here. In the meantime, enjoy ‘Don’t Let it Bring You Down’ and check out the entire album. Not many bands can take great songs by other artists and make them their own with the style and confidence of Cowboy Junkies.
