Another amazing cover version this week, Bob possibly more enthused than his famous enthusiasm during the We are the World recording. Pitchfork report: “Bob Dylan has paid tribute to his late collaborator Tom Petty. During his show in Colorado last night, Dylan covered Petty’s 1991 song “Learning to Fly.” Watch footage of the performance below. Following news of Petty’s death on October 2, Dylan issued a statement remembering his friend. “It’s shocking, crushing news,” he said. “I thought the world of Tom. He was great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.” Dylan and Petty played together in the Traveling Wilburys, the rock supergroup that also featured Roy Orbison and George Harrison. The pair also performed in 1986 on Dylan’s True Confessions tour, which resulted in the concert film Hard to Handle.
Dylan joins other artists who have paid homage to Petty live, including the National, Jason Aldean, Coldplay, and R.E.M. Musicians such as Ezra Koenig, Sharon Van Etten, Ryan Adams, and more have also shared their remembrances of Petty and his work.”
