Americana UK’s Halloween Horrors – casting a spell on you

My, my… aren’t you the persistent one? Come in, come in… I’m afraid we’re going to have to ask you to stand… the chairs are not quite what they should be today… Bad chair. No, no, it’s quite safe, we assure you.

Today’s spooktacular song is an eerie slow grower from The Armoires, who can be seen in all their festive finery. The Armoires have previous form on the whole Halloween vibe, having released the album “Octoberland” in the titular month last year. They say of ‘Full-On Witch Mode’ that “We would have created this song even if it hadn’t been for “Chilling, Thrilling Hooks And Haunted Harmonies” – the writing on our last album kept pushing closer and closer to that eldritch borderline, and we began to joke that the only thing left was to go ‘full-on witch mode.’ So we opened up that grimoire and leaned into the lexicon of alchemy and animism. But like a lot of our songs, it’s about looking beyond yourself and connecting with something bigger – the natural world, other human beings, just being thoughtful rather than self-involved. That fit community vibe of the Big Stir Halloween compilation, too… all the artists on it did such amazing work celebrating a holiday that we love for its focus on self-expression. It’s dazzlingly diverse but all connected, and we’re thrilled to be part of it.

And what could be a more suitable accompaniment than a viewing of Robert Eggers’ folk-horror “The Witch“? We’d say don’t have nightmares…

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
